I Am Waiting by Lawrence Ferlinghetti

i think this poem is about religion specially Christianity. he speaks about rebirth the second coming, christians believe that the second coming is when jesus come back to earth and that is when our lives end or we go to eternal life with God which he also speaks about. i think his looking back and comparing it to what america is now. his probably comparing it when jesus was here and to now. the writer is expressing his thoughts and feelings to the reader. he wants everyone to really know america.. he wants others to discover how powerful america could be and how lost it could also be

  1. Careful with the religious hammer: actually, references to religion, spec. Christianity, is only one of the problems the poem takes up; "problem" because much of the poem is ironic and sarcastic--indictment of "Christian" (big "C") ideology and rhetoric. This is really a poem of critical consciousness (much socio-political criticism here, as well), rather than a paen to conventional religiosity (the speaker is "waiting" for a rebirth, not of Christ, but "wonder"; not a renaissance of conventional religious iconography/ideology, but (note the details,it's all in the details) "the last supper... served again / with a strange new appetizer"; on the rocks, with a twist...
